Small town
I’m driving through a small town and I see a music store. I always like to visit music stores. There is a part of me that really wished I was a ‘music’ person – able to play multiple instruments, able to spend time playing songs and making music; just kind of getting lost in enjoying making music. But that is a pipe dream because the music talent gene bypassed me and passed right into my daughter. But I still enjoy music stores. Anyway, as I was driving past this music store, I noticed a big neon ‘open’ sign flashing which caught my eye. I assumed the store was open…… silly me. Because as I got closer to the store, there were not one, but two, of those cardboard ‘closed’ signs in the window. So what was it? Was it closed or was it open? Should I stop or should I not? Do I go up to the door to find out if it is open or closed, or do I just drive by assuming the closed signs win out since there were two of them? Of course that is what I did – just drove on by. So what kind of sign do you display when it comes to your faith? Do you display a big neon ‘open’ sign – letting people see that you live your faith; that you are not afraid to openly express your faith in Jesus Christ. Or do you display a closed sign – you keep your faith locked up inside of you and no one could really know if you were a person of faith or not – no one would know that you are a follower of Christ. Or, do you send a mixed message? Do you show both the open and closed signs? Do you visibly go to worship and spend time working at the church – your open sign – but then keep quiet about your faith when the opportunity comes to let people know that you trust in Christ - your closed sign? I figure the person in the music store forgot to either turn off the open sign or forgot to take the closed signs out of the window – regardless there was surely a mixed message. Think about your life and what kind of sign you display – or are you a mixed message as well?
