Bus trip
I went on a long bus trip last week. – long bus trip. Actually, I like bus trips. I like traveling along and watching out the window and observing the scenery. You can really see some nifty things as you travel along. It was a good time of year to be sight-seeing because as you went by neighborhoods and houses and could see the bushes and flowers in bloom that were quite pretty. There were some roses that were absolutely gorgeous and especially in this one part of the trip it seemed as if everyone had the same variety of roses growing – and they were all quite striking. However a good deal of the trip was on interstates instead of through the interesting neighborhoods and country roads. Interstates are good in saving time but they sure aren’t very interesting when one likes to look out and observe the countryside. Usually the view is trees. Lots and lots of trees. One section of interstate the road was elevated so that it seemed as if you were traveling almost even with the tops of the tree line and then the road would dip down a little and the trees would look a little taller. What I began to notice is that when the road was a little elevated, as you looked beyond the trees you could see the steepled crosses of churches and big signs advertising various gas stations and businesses and fast foods. So as you looked over the tree tops, you knew exactly what was in the small little town or village nestled behind those trees. When you saw the Sheetz sign you knew there would be a place to get gas and some really good sandwiches, or when you saw the Kentucky Fried Chicken sign you knew there would be some chicken, or when you saw the Advance Auto Sign below It would be some auto parts. You couldn’t actually see the actual business, but there was no doubt that those services were there below the tall signs. And you knew that below those tall steeples, would sit a church – a place to worship. No one really knows us. No one really knows what we think or what we believe unless we tell them – or show them. Just like you couldn’t see the business below the sign, you only know what the business is because of the sign. And you only know what we think is important by the signs we give off in what we do and what we talk about. Interested in baseball, that is what you are going to talk about; interested in horses, that is what you talk about. Those are your signs and that is how people get to know what is important to you. The church steeples I saw above the trees told me that below those steeples were places of God. And if our relationship with God is important to us, then we need to talk about it and let people know. If you never let anyone know you are a person of faith, then we misunderstand Jesus’ directive to tell the world about him. If our signs reflect who we are then we need to put up the God sign and let people know that God is what our life is all about. So let you sign be known, let people see that you are a child of God, talk about and live so that people know that God is important to you!
Amen!
